Creek time is in full swing again. Thought I would give the Flag another shot as it has not produced great for me. I guess I just hadn’t found the right scenario yet.10 points -

Florida Bait Makers
BigBaitThirty and 2 others reacted to Hoosier_Hawgz for a topic
Basswood seems to be a solid starter wood! I know some people who use it almost exclusively for making mold masters, and it should work well if you want to use it as a bait by itself. I don’t think I’m alone when I say that your first try won’t be what you hoped it would be, but the only way to get better is to keep making them. No matter how much you read or watch, the best thing you can do to learn is to grab some wood and something sharp and just start working.3 points -

Decided to head out the second after a brutal front and thunder storm rolled through and found a few chunky one that crushed the Illude 3 piece Zombie and of course thrown on my Nameless Custom Rods 790 H - perfect match. So loving my lil Grizzly 1648 - getting it setup just the way I want.3 points -

I’m from central Florida, but I don’t sell my baits. Like Big Epp I decided a couple years ago to make my own and it has paid off. If you like to get tinker and bet really frustrated and throw stuff around…..you should try it.3 points -
DS Customs 1st day out.
brootalititties and 2 others reacted to maine y yak for a topic
Best of the year so far on my first day with ds Customs 8" in shad glide in perch. A little wind over a boulder gets a nice one in Southern Maine! Great bait by a super guy-also my buddy sold his boat literally right after we got off the water! Bittersweet but a new boat not far away --nice3 points -

Got some more work done: I poured molds, made a few prototypes, poured rubber fins, and did some swim testing. The swim is great for how far in to testing I am. Obviously because of the size of the lure, the glide is extremely wide. I really just need to work on stabilizing the bait because there is the slightest bit of body roll during the glide.3 points

Biggest Swimbait Yet
Doomlurker and one other reacted to landlures for a topic
I started bait-building about 2 years ago and this is my biggest project yet. It is about 11 inches long and I'm estimating it to be around 12-13 ounces. I started this 10 days ago and this is the progress I've made so far.2 points -

(2) Shimano Tranx 301 5:8/1 reels w/Gomexus knobs (stock handle) - $250ea shipped Both have been recently serviced and upgraded w/carbon fiber drags. Both look and perform like new, but I noticed upon receiving them back that one feels a bit tighter (there is a ever so slight noise of the internals as you retrieve on that one). Each performs flawlessly, I wouldn’t sell something with an issue. Just letting it be known to potential buyers. I love these reels, and have more Tranxs but I need to clear out some ‘backups’ at this time. (2) F5 MVTs 806MH one is used (7/10 condition) and one is brand new never seen a reel mounted - $180 for the used and $220 for the new. Not shipping rods at this time, I’m located in Central Valley California for meetup. May be able to meet at TD4 but would prefer to sell prior as I’m helping out that day. PM if interested, no trades. Thanks SU2 points

That’s funny bc it’s standard practice in saltwater fishing where the fish actually pull drag and put up long fights. Knot failures, most of the time are user error.2 points -

Zillion HD vs Mago 003
LureFlyingAcrossThePond reacted to brootalititties for a topic
I have both. I really love my zillion, I bought an extra spool to swap line types on the fly so it is sort of my go to when I’m doing the 1 rod 1 reel thing, I also like the line uptake, I have the 6.3 which is around 28 ipt on the retrieve. It is a great reel and I dont have any major complaints about it. all that being said I think the mago is a better built reel. I prefer the solid side plate lockup design and it feels like it has bigger/heavier gears. I also believe the spool holds a little more line while maintaining the 200 size form factor. The only reason I don’t like the mago is that it only comes in an “xg” I think it’s like 37-39 ipt on the retrieve which is just way faster than what I like to fish, however I think a lot of guys actually prefer higher ipt gear ratios and overall I think it’s a heavier duty reel than the zillion1 point -

Zillion HD vs Mago 003
LureFlyingAcrossThePond reacted to Morph808 for a topic
Love my Zillion HD 1520SH. Plenty of line capacity to fish 20lb fluorocarbon or copoly. I don't think the new Zillion HD has as deep of a spool. The older Zillion does cast effortlessly and can fish as low as 0.5oz well. I use mine for up to 4oz baits. Very smooth under load. Tbh I'm curious if the DRT flat Knobs I got from you can actually fit the stock handle.1 point -

Summertime and spotted bass
petey pete reacted to Riley201dc for a topic
I have been chasing the trout eaters and as summer progresses here in nor cal the more the big ones seems to be going deep or finding the cold water up river. Love to hear some opinions of targeting the spots in deeper water. I have been learning the hard way also with soft baits that it seems more often than not spots are eating them head first and I am having to change my rigging on softbaits. Anyone still throwing the hudds deep in summer?1 point -

braid to flouro fishing
BittyRanger reacted to Morgan Y for a topic
If you’re not using a b FG knot you will snap your connection knot, other knots simply aren’t strong enough to take the force. Also if you use a long leader then the “3-5ft” that people recommend nearly every metric you can think of gets better. Less visibility to fish, more shock length to absorb shock, less downwards convex arch in your line, and you have to retie less. If you’re going to do braid to leader tie a longer leader.1 point -
