Shellcracker Smackdown

Waterbodies around me are finally open and ready to go! God its been a long winter.

I got out of class today at 12:30, I sent some emails and decided to get out and fish, being that it was finally calm enough to go out in the yak (at least I thought).

I got to the spot hoping to catch one or two on a glide and call it a day. Looked at the water and immediately put on the shellcracker after seeing the wind. I new I would have no choice but to fish fast and cover water.

I worked my way against the wind to the NE corner, a section I had done well at in the past. It didn't take long to have a solid flurry of action once I pulled off the bank into a pad field. Within 10 casts I had 6 fish and just like that no bites for an hour...

Kept working my way around the North end, running into fish every so often, each ripping the rod out of my hands or knocking slack (impressive for 1-2lb fish). I even got a fish to take my mattlures hardgill boat side, which I was stoked on. It was clear that it wasn't about getting fish to bite but instead, finding the fish.

I worked my way down the West side of the pond with not even a bite to show, I was starting to think that I should've stayed in the calm water at the North end, at the very least it was more comfortable to fish in given the temps in the low 50s and rain. Eventually I made it to the South shore, the wind had been pushing in all day and had gotten significantly stronger since I left the North end. This made for magic. I am not kidding when I say that I caught near 100 fish total, most of those being from a 100yd stretch of shoreline. It wasn't uncommon to catch fish multiple casts in a row, one time catching a bass on 6 consecutive casts. It was truly the most insane bite I have ever experienced with largemouth, burning the shellcracker as fast as I could reel in low 40 degree water and 20+mph wind. Who would've thought. My biggest fish ended up going somewhere in the high 3s, with the waves bouncing my scale too much to tell. For a while I was convinced there wasn't a fish over 2lbs in the pond with the amount I had caught but I was happily surprised. I think I will be taking a night trip to this pond eventually in hopes of larger fish.

This is why I love spring, I am now sitting at home with a sore wrist and arms from catching so many fish, while going into the day without a single bass on the season, and I just hope I get to do it again!

Phenomenal Connor! Gotta love the little Shellcracker. I tried fishing it recently and did not even come close to the epic day you had. Man that’s incredible. Hopefully you will have many more days like that this season.

**great write up as always.
