If you can afford to, go to a hobby store and get some real wood carving tools. It will make your life a lot easier.  Using what you are, is a recipe for a trip to the ER.

So far the proto looks great. I vote for scales if you have the time and patience for it.

Dan, a simple set like this would be ideal. Probably be a lot easier to do your scales with these too. If you have a Hobby Lobby, Michael's or Blick art supplies you can find an array of stuff. Or otder right online.

Looks great.  I vote for adding scales.  Keep us posted on the progress!

Will do! Thanks!

If your molding it why not a smoothie mold then carve scales and make another mold?

Never heard of a smoothie mold before...care to enlighten me a bit? Cost is also an issue. Silicone itself isn't too cheap, otherwise I would mold it more than once like you said. Thanks for the input though!

Id scrap the finish nails and use 316 tig rod or carbon pins.. never understood the finishing nail thing

I'll look into them. Thanks for the suggestion! This is my first hinge style joint with a pin. Finishing nails just seemed like a good starting point for me. They're strong, the perfect length for my glide, and others have used them with success as well. I was definitely planning to look into rods like you suggested for the future though.
