aikenyounggun
I flew this summer with some small glides. Where I was going didn't have the rods to throw bigger stuff and I was nervous anyway. Had zero issues. I only fly carry-on I do know they have limits on plier size (I do not remember the length). You can do some google searching too. Basically it's not covered in TSA's handbook. If you get stopped, ask nicely to see it in their rules. Heard this works a lot of the time I'm sure other guys will chime in

Thanks for the info.
JR Basser
I'd pay BIG money to see the TSA searchers try to figure out what the hell the "Mandingo 3000" is!!! thedonnguyen
http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?search=fishing%20lures "Fishing rods are permitted as carry-on and checked baggage; however, passengers should check with the air carrier to confirm that the fishing rod fits within size limitations for carry-on items. Sharp fishing tackle that may be considered dangerous, such as large fish hooks, should be sheathed, securely wrapped, and packed in your checked luggage. Like other high-value objects, you may wish to pack expensive reels or fragile tackle that does not pose a security threat (small flies) in your carry-on baggage. Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane." Darth Baiter
bassing305
I went up north earlier this year for Muskie fishing and TSA gave me no problems whatsoever with my swimbaits. The trip was a great success since I caught a big Muskie.

Bloodkitty
Yeah, I took all my hooks off and I'm going to wrap them and pack them separately just as a precaution. Thanks for all the feedback and the links. Happy Holidays!
Ceaser
ive flown a few times, bag full of swims and reels, 2/0 trebels, split ring pliers never an issue. they usually pull it to the side at the xray since reels look pretty shady with all the gears and tick tocky looking things. but just let me thru, never an issue
Good Year 71
I've been wondering the same question actually. I used to fly business all the time but that was before the anal double check systems of today. Be warned; if they say no your only recourse is to forfeit the baits. Probably best to remove hooks, as smartly stated above, or at minimum add a split ring plier to your bag just in case you need it on site. Another option is to contact a local friendly, buddy or tackle shop or someone, and have your baits shipped before arrival.
fishinpunk
I've done my share of winter travel. Once had an argument with the check in clerk about carrying on a 31" travel tube full of 3 piece rods. They wanted me to check it, I took my chances with TSA and had no issue. This was coming home from Mexico. Also, I have heard of guys having to take off all of their line from their spools before getting through TSA. I always carry on my reels and put the spools and lures in my checked baggage. Good luck on your trip, hopefully you have no issues.
dmayer88
Flew a few times domestically and once internationally, baits in check bag, no issues.
