I am making a trip to So Cal and I am looking at purchasing a reel for throwing big Hudds, DEPS 250, and Roman made. Was thinking about a Shimano Calcutta 400 b, a Tran x. Or I was also thinking why wouldn’t an old school Ambassador 5000 work..... opinions? Thanks in advance

The ambassador will work fine I've used one Muskie fishing for years. If money is not a problem go with the tranx it's a awesome reel. Calcutta is also a very nice reel. Between the tranx or Calcutta would be up to if you prefer round reels ( Calcutta) or low profile reels ( tranx ).

I’ve fished my fair share of big inshore reels dealing with snook in Florida and I am in love with the tranx 400 .. it’s ok good I’m debating taking it to the next Dry Tortugas trip I go on to slow pitch jig for monster polagics with it

After some nightmares with shimano I went with the Revo Toro Rocket, it's a beast of a reel and picks up 42 inches per turn. I have no problem manipulating a 250 or a 200 with the reel handles and not the rod.

can i ask what nightmares you had with shimano?

Use the search bar and read everything you can. There's a ton of info on this subject and your questions should be answered there. After that, it's just figuring out what works for you and the baits you want to fish.
