chefchris
So started turning a batch of rats a couple weeks back and finally able to check some progress done one em. bodies are 6", turned some from WRC-Western Red Cedar (real light weight blanks) skinnier blanks, AYC-Alaskan Yellow Cedar (super tight grain) fatter blanks and SC-Spanish Cedar (this wood varied so much, lightest blanks were 1.8oz to the heaviest at 3.9oz) which is just crazy variartions. Which is one reason I weigh all my blanks and decide which ones gets used for what, to help keep em consistent finished weights. Did the typical V cut, and used #210 SS screw eyes for the joint, flattened the belly too. Burned the wood, added some black eyes, black RonZ tail held in place with a ss nail, recessed hole in the body. Rounded lip, decoy quad 1/0 hooks, didnt even seal this one. This guy wakes like crazy, super slow to fast, you can twitch it in place and it makes a ton of noise. Also figured out how to do offset eyes accurately and safely. The little drawing explains it and hopefully the pics help. Did one with some leg skirts (Toxic style, have to give credit for the idea) Did some with the Lure Parts Online 5 gram weighed belly hangers, these things are awesome!, Glued em in with some devcon 2 ton 24 hour epoxy. Have a buddy whos been using these for stripers and they havent failed so I dont see any issue with em. Then burned two more, these 3 are spanish cedar, the non burned one is the super heavy blank, went with the magnum screw eyes for the joint on these, as I made the back section smaller, got em heat sealed with epoxy. Dirty Diesel, El_Weruso, sfla and 10 others

chefchris
So got the 3 I did finished up today, and a quick photo shoot in the yard. Interesting to see how much wood varies in weight. All these baits were from from the same batch of Spanish cedar. You can see the lightest one weighs 2.37oz, this piece in particular was incredibly light weight and had a strip of very soft wood, you can see the thick burnt line, that’s the soft wood. the skirted one weighed in at 2.45oz and super dense one weighs 3.35oz, almost a full oz over the lightest one. they are all weighed the same, and rigged the same as far as hook/rings/tails. Then some glamour shots before I fish the hell out of this week, got a 4 day trip on Thursday CaliBassin, Charettey, xflak666x and 1 other
El_Weruso
There's something appealing with the symmetry of your baits haha Edited June 5, 2019 by Neill Hernandez CaliBassin
azfisher
Lookin' killer! Likin' the skirts, should give some good action on the pause and the raccoon eye band. I'd be interested to see what kind of differences you'll see between the heavier vs. lighter, they way they swim. I've never found that big of a weight difference in the same type/pc of wood. WRC for me made a great swim but when I used some heavy dense oak, it kind of killed the action some. Seemed to push more water, but didn't swim as well. I'd kill for 4 days of fishing right now, good luck!
Rogervang
Killer looking rat brother! Great progress. Keep them coming.
chefchris
actual specs on these build wise all screw eyes are LPO .092 magnum screw eyes in assorted lengths hook hangers are the LPO 5 gram weighted hangers body 5.5” and with tail 10” tail is a black 8” creme worm cut down, held in place with a 1” ss nail split rings are Rosco 4H in their new matte/flat black, which is so bad ass. I’ve used their rings for years on all my striper plugs. Hooks are Decoy Quad 1/0s, really liking these hooks lately. the two burnt ones have a 10 degree lip angle and the heavy one is 20 degrees as far as action, I’ll get some actually video this weekend, the two videos I have were both taken at night with a headlamp so less than ideal! They wake and knock nicely. You can also work em with short reel cranks and make em splash/pop/twitch almost in place with very little forward movement. Or use the rod and make a bigger commotion.
