  1. Hi SU - first off I wanted to thank a lot of you that I’ve met/interacted with over the years for reaching out. Even though I’m not too old I suffered a stroke out on the water almost two weeks ago that caused almost complete left sided paralysis and vision loss. I was kayak fishing alone on a pretty remote part of a river and luckily was wearing my life jacket which I knew had my phone in the pocket. Somehow I was able to unlock my phone using face recognition and knew roughly where the call button was - randomly pressing a the screen and to dial anyone for help. I was again fortunate that a family member answered and called 911 and get me rescued off the water. The first responders went above and beyond - also being nice enough to go back and grab my gear after I was transported to the hospital. Current my vision has slowly started to come back albeit not what it was previously. I feel very fortunate to have such great friends and family. My favorite rod (LDC white label XH 8’6” was unfortunately broken during the event and I’m hoping to replace it. I know shipping is expensive but I’m happy to pay if someone has one they’d consider selling. I’m on the east coast and can’t really drive at the moment so local pickup isn’t really an option (unless you’re in Vermont, nh, or Boston area - I’ll be there for doctor visits. Thanks again SU for being a great and supporting community!!

  7. What’s up everyone. Hope you all are enjoying the 4th holiday weekend. Happy bday America! So I wanted a slimmer profile shad type bait. Certain lake in the area is on a good reaction bait bite. I’ve been getting a few good ones on my original shad bait but wanted a different profile. So here they are. New shad body. The 3 piece is a lipless floater. Slow med retrieve leaves a nice wake. Burns great too. Glide is a ROF 1. It almost suspends. Gonna be so deadly around bluff walls and flooded cover. Very excited to get them on the water this week for some chunks! No details yet. Will carve gills and all after I test a bit more. Enjoy the holiday and the freedom it brings!

  9. Kinda a cool story on this fish, while reeling in a smaller fish I caught on a wacky rig, I saw this bass chasing down the small one I was reeling in. Continued fishing for another hour or two and came back with my new 86baits sentinel in the black bass color to the same spot. She t-boned it right where I spotted her earlier! 5.44 lbs and a new pb for me

  25. Went out for a holiday trip with my brother and a few buddies. Bought the finnbait madhatter last week and couldn’t wait to put it to use! Thing had fish on it so hot they would miss 2-3 times then launch themselves out of the water to land on top of the bait. The most BadAss blowups I’ve ever seen! topwater cooled and I tossed on the real prey and she got chewed. happy 4th!

  27. I personally have to stand and fish! Went from rangers to a kayak. Not into the towing a boat from state to state anymore. H rail on my pa14 lets me lean against it. Spot lock motor guide on the front 100 amp lithium on the back. I never use my pedals anymore. Keep them in the back of the yak in case I need them. Lots of standing space. Small lakes I don’t bring the seat.

  32. No worries - I don’t have any motor or speach deficits. Although many folks think of these losses as classical deficits of stroke it’s entirely dependent on the region of the brain that didn’t receive perfusion and ultimately oxygen. So typically unless that involves the movement related brain areas such as the motor cortices or the cerebellum then movement wouldn’t be influenced. It’s more complicated than what I mention above because there are other areas that relay brain signals like the thalamus which can indirectly impact all of these things (motor, sensory, etc). Ironically I’m a neuroscientist…

  33. Denny, if you're going motorized like the MK consider your alternate propulsion in the event the motor dies. Some motorized yaks don't paddle very well. Your battery life should be way more than a few hours but you're going to have to pony up for a good 75 to 100 ah battery. Then you aren't going to want to run your electronics off the same battery so you'll need a smaller battery for your sonar. Since this is your first yak, I'd recommend getting pedal powered and keep it simple. Customize as you go along and see what works for you. With all the accessories available from yakgear, yakgadget, and many other companies, a fishing kayak is infinitely customizable. I started with a used Jackson coosa and quickly started modifying it, trying different products and seeing what I liked. When the time came to upgrade from that I knew exactly how I wanted to rig out my new ride. I'm fishing out of a nucanoe pursuit now and love it. I'd recommend doing test floats on as many brands as you can before committing. Also check out your local kayak fishing clubs, maybe go to a tournament site after check in and talk to other yakkers about their rigs. Most guys I've encountered are pretty cool about sharing the mods they've done on their rigs. At the tournaments I'm always amazed at the wide variety of yaks and transportation systems that guys use. You can surely get some ideas for loading and transporting too. As far as rods go, I use my regular swimbait without considering the handle length. Yes sometimes the extra handle length is a challenge but it's something you learn to adapt to.

    200 size reels

I own a couple of Z2020s and they are indeed my favorite reels that I have. Tanks. But they don't really meet the 'compact reel' criteria that OP was asking about.

Don’t get me wrong the zillion is amazing but at that price point I rather use my beast 40! but to be honest at that price point I would say spend a few extra dollars and get yourself a Z2020….. it’s by far my favorite reel. I throw anything on that reel from deps 250’s to K9’s all the way down to some 2 ounce baits.. jack of all trades in my opinion. I haven’t tested it out on the ghost yet but in a couple days here I’m gonna see if it can handle it!

  39. Well done, and way to be patient! A lot of anglers would have immediately cast something at it. Waiting a bit to let things settle down and reposition worked out perfectly.

@Big Epp @danthefisherman thank you both for your responses. Since I’m still trying to get this finished sooner rather than later, I thought I would give the melted soft plastic tail a try. It’s super duper rough and won’t be the finished tail that’s installed on it, but I just wanted to see how well I could make it work. It turns out it didn’t work too shabby! I had a prior bite from one a bit bigger than this but whiffed it on the hookset. It doesn’t swim how I had envisioned it would, but as far as a twitch bait goes it looks fantastic. It can just about suspend in place while darting from side-to-side without any of the rolling or nosing up that it had previously. Also, as much as it pains me to admit, I think 90% of my previous problems with this bait were my fault. I’ve never fished, let alone owned a glide bait before, so learning how to fish this effectively has been as much of a learning curve as actually making it has been. Since the bass seem to like it at this point, I’m going to come up with a better soft plastic tail and finally break out my airbrush for the first time on a bait. The next week or two are about to get very interesting!

  42. I used to have to haul my kayak around on the roof of a Subaru with no roof rack while my truck was out of commission for a bit. Used stuff like this: https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/field-stream-canoe-carrier-kit-18fnsufscnblckktxpsr/18fnsufscnblckktxpsr?sku=18968930&camp=CSE:DSG_92700072972549300_pla_pla-1749939368097_58700008026119464_71700000100235726&segment=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnf-kBhCnARIsAFlg490t62Mms5baYqmsGFBphbnFLLycBWX31tEXMrKdZwELUq7JGDz7elIaAqYDEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds You can get other "noodles" and such to fit your needs. It works in a pinch, but may do some minor damage to your roof.

Casting big swimbaits, distance is never an issue. I can bomb cast them as far as I want. In my opinion after servicing the three reels I mentioned the Beast 40 is, well a beast compared to the delicate 200 series Daiwas.

  48. Whippersnapper 2.0 is the way to go. Very versatile. You can wake it or crank it stock and you can use lead tape or Zappu stickers to get it down deeper. I put a bit of lead right in front of the back hook and it makes the bait walk tighter too kinda like a mini throwback mobwalker. Adds more headhunt too I think. Play around with it and see what gets bit for you.
