Been struggling since fall kicked in 3-4 weeks ago but finally figured them out this week. Was happily not getting skunked, and actually catching 2lber+ until this big girl completely surprised me. I knew this lake had big girls but to date my PB here was only 6lbs so I was NOT expecting this. I was initially thinking it was a big cat but when i realised it was a bass holy cow! 9lbs and 25"this is my new lake PB! Hope everyone figures out the tricky 'fall transition' soon! This is my third 9+ in 2019, can't wait to see what rest of fall brings!8 points

CA duck opener
Londonmitch and 3 others reacted to CaliBassin for a topic
Opened for me a few weeks ago because I’m in far norcal. Since opener i have been 3 times and killed limits each time. 4 man limit first day, 2 man limit the second and another 2 man limit yesterday. Also got myself a banded hen mallard. My first4 points -
I don’t know who’s bait I haven’t sent back for over a year. Haven’t heard anything. And if my advice didn’t help or the bait is fucked I would send you refund instantly, no one would have to ask. I don’t think you told me it won’t swim at all cuz I would have offered a refund in a hot second. I still will refund it. But I don’t really know what’s up, if the advice I gave wasn’t good you should have told me that. Just hit me up thru email if you want to get your money back or whatever. I fix baits all the time for people that break em or something like that.3 points

How’d everyone do? Whiffed on a couple opportunities Saturday which ended up turning into a very frustrating day, but had some redemption Sunday morning. Could have had an easy limit with gadwall and spoons but only wanted mallards. Should have had a 5th but he got deep in the tules and I couldn’t find him.3 points -

Slammer fish in Texas
365swimbait and one other reacted to Amistoad for a topic
After getting my 7” slammer from SU member cubneck a couple of days ago, I knew I had to give it a try. The local bass are still sort of in summer pattern since the weather is weird. It got up to 92 on the lake today. But morning clouds made it bearable as I launched and hit some of my better spots. Saw a couple of other boats with guys either throwing spinnerbaits or Carolina Rigs. As usual, I was the only sicko throwing big baits. But the slammer proved its worth. No trophies, but 4 solid 3-4.5 lbs fish tried to yank it from my line. Definitely going to see a lot more action this fall as the bigger ladies move shallow.2 points -
Pa. Pike likes Mexican

Bombed my last cast out an 4 cranks in something blow the Burrito shad about 3ft out the water. I finished the cast an was ready to leave when my buddy said bomb it out again. So i did an a few cranks in the burrito stoped swimming. My F5 started to load so i swung for the fence. My rod doubled over an my conquest started to scream. The fish was heading for deeper water. I thought i finally hooked into my 8lb large mouth or a 6lb + smalljaw. I gained some line back an realised i had a big pike. I was heart broken an excited at the same time. I dont know how my buddy got that thing to fit in the net but he did.2 points -
Salt Water TT or other hard baits for Cedros Island
Badfish562 and one other reacted to Fishstix024 for a topic
I'm headed down to Cedros Island MX next summer for a a full 5 days of fishing. Pretty stoked to throw swimbaits for big Calicos and yellowtail. I'm planning on having a few baits made for the trip and also going to grab a couple salt water Triple Trouts. Who's got reviews on the SW TTs? I'm looking on the sit now and they have a few 8" in stock. What's the difference between the 8" with the 3/4 listed and the normal 8"? Anyone have favorite colors? I was leaning towards a Mack and a Mint. Anyone here been to Cedros and had any luck on other big baits?2 points -

Thin Vs. Thick
LUV-2-CATCH'EM and one other reacted to danthefisherman for a topic
Drag/water resistance definitely plays a huge role in a bait's action. The thinner the bait the less drag it has coming through the water. The wild beat as mentioned is wafer thin and has very minimal water resistance cutting through the water. Concurrently, the bigger the bait the more water it displaces and the more buoyant/floating force upward it has. This allows for more ballast weight to be added to increase balance. At the end of the day it is all about finding the perfect bait profile and component situation in order to balance it well without hurting the action too much. Definitely interesting stuff to think about...I wish they offered a class called bait mechanics in school haha2 points -
Brook Tout Swimbaits?
__jordanb_ and one other reacted to bigpoppabass for a topic
Brook trout is a tough imitation because the best imitators don't look like portrait copies imo. Like the woodtail above. Fish arrow made a pattern called an art berry rainbow trout. It looks like an artic char. It is money on Brook trout lakes I fish. I would say it's triggering features are overall rusted red hue and dying hay belly look.2 points -
Gear Ratio Help
Millerst12 and one other reacted to bigpoppabass for a topic
If spool stays mostly full you should be good. 5:6 is not that slow if I remember correctly and faster than 5:1. Finding the right reel (need a super smooth one) is key to enjoyable gliding, because the best glides are worked from the reel handle imo.2 points -
You should be able to work any bait slow to med with any gear ratio reel. Sometimes the issue is carching up to the fiah when they hit the bait and or when, you are fighting them.2 points

CA duck opener
Doomlurker and one other reacted to Londonmitch for a topic
Nice work @Doomlurker and @CaliBassin we had a rough opener here in Southern Ca. Birds haven’t been pushed down here yet. Luckily got to start the season in Alberta in the middle of Sept which was unbelievable. May be up in Klamath middle of Nov @CaliBassin. Great place to shoot2 points -
Brook trout and bass don’t usually overlap in habitat. Brookies like a lot colder water than most bass can tolerate. Rainbows and browns are compatible in some waters, but Brookies...not so much. Most of the paint jobs (including that beautiful Wood Tail) are brown trout patterns because browns tolerate the warmest waters of any trout species. Still cool looking baits though!2 points

Brook Tout Swimbaits?
__jordanb_ and one other reacted to tybo jones for a topic
More guys need to start painting brookie patterns. Brookies are everywhere, all over the country. I figured someone would make it a staple in their lineup. Must be a pain in the butt to paint them. here’s an OG woodtail brookie. Not exactly an easy bait to find bait but just an example.2 points -
Best pattern I've seen yet is from a company called Lanciotti Lures. His brookies are awesome.2 points

Brook Tout Swimbaits?
Amistoad reacted to __jordanb_ for a topic
Thats true, I live up in the mountains in western NC and there are trout everywhere. Rainbows are definitely the most popular and I have a bunch of rainbow trout baits but brown trout and brook trout colors are much harder to find, especially brookie colors. I guess it isn't the most popular thing to have brookies and largies in the same body of water in most of the country, but where I live trout is the main forage for bass in a lot of places I fish. That's why I'm on the hunt for a brookie pattern cause there is one place I fish that is super pressured that the main forage is brook trout and there are monsters in there. Thanks for the input man!1 point -

24" PB
wtrwsel reacted to __jordanb_ for a topic
I wish I did but I only got a length, it was pouring the rain and I was kinda freaking out lol. There's not a lot of places to bass fish around me and the places that do have bass they don't get very big and a 5lb fish is rare to see, a 6-7 even rarer. Next time I break my PB I will be sure to get length girth and weight!1 point -

Is My Drag Too Tight?
DrewManFishing reacted to waynem for a topic
There are a lot of thing that can go wrong in the extrusion process of making monofilament (believe me, I've seen them all). Even the very best line manufacturers will have a few bad spools get through quality control since they are not testing every spool. Sounds like you have a bad spool of line; toss it out and get a new one. Also never buy line from eBay or a discount site. Its really easy to fake the packaging. Lots of the cheap line on those places is Chinese counterfeit stuff.1 point -

SU Store/SU Crew
boylah reacted to buzzed bait for a topic
Very generic kind of "review" here, but so very necessary after the awesome experiences i've had with these guys. Some time ago i had purchased one of the Anatek shirts and on my first outing my neoprene life jacket made the shirt look like a cat had clawed it at the shoulders. I mean it's a fishing shirt sure, but also sporty enough to rock it elsewhere so i was a little bummed and asked it they'd heard anything similar. They said no, but insisted on shipping me a replacement shirt and told me to keep the other one! That's been a while and both shirts are still going strong and seriously the best sun shirt i've ever used! I just snagged some more stuff a few weeks ago, the rain jacket being one of them. It fit me everywhere except the sleeves so i just thought i'd sell it and move on. They saw my for sale post and instantly messaged me saying i could do a hassle-free return! So i'm thinking sure, that sounds cool. Literally in minutes I had already been refunded and had a prepaid return label in my email! Could not have been easier! Just throwing this out there in case anyone is ever hesitant about a purchase from the SU Store...... top of the line gear and top notch service from these guys! This of course won't be my last purchase from these guys by far, in fact i'm due for another XL wrap. My other wrap is still going stronger than all the other ones combined, i just need to get me another one for hauling a few more baits with me on the yak! Thanks SU crew!1 point -
