Since the lakes are freezing over here in MA I suppose I’ll get my fix by telling stories all winter. So.. it’s late June, my brother and I take a trip to Maine to fish my favorite lake for the weekend. Arrived around 10pm and the lake was glass calm and moon bright as ever. I had a real good feeling. We roll up to the first rocky point and IMMEDIATLY get bit. First fish went 5,3 on the G2. After that I was getting blow ups, swirls, swooshes, and hook ups almost every cast with a solid mixture of aggressive smallmouth and largemouth. Since my bro (wacky worm guy) doesn’t throw big baits, I gave him my slammer setup and reluctantly joined the wake bait fun. Combined we put around 20-25 fish in the boat that night. Even doubled up on a 3 and 4. We were out there all night catching fish, laughing and cracking jokes, having DAMN good time. I think I could’ve casted out my shoe and these fish would’ve hit it. Then about 3am rolls around and the bite literally shut off. I mean we went from a hectic feeding frenzy to not a single bite in a split second. To this day I don’t know what urged these bass to go crazy like that. It happens to me about 2-3 times a year, this time being exceptionally fun. Some people say it’s the moon cycle. To me it’s just the luck of the draw. Here’s some of the few pictures we took of the bigger ones. Have 2 brand new shellcrackers still in box. Bluegill pattern. Bought 3 and planned on keeping them as backups...1 is all i need though i'm pretty sure (if they ever make the tails available i hope). Not looking to swindle anyone with inflated prices, but i am interested in trading them - looking for any used 3:16, got em coach, triple trout, crankdown slammers, deep jack/deep jack jr, fish30acre...or anything in perch pattern thats either a hudd or hardbait. So a while back a member here (Nate) was looking for a Blackdog floating Shellcracker with a lip, which if you looked around aren't easy to come by. I offered to cut the bait and install the lip for him if he couldn't find one, something I had done twice on my own baits. After a while he decided to send me the bait and the lip which I believe he got from a member here. The first pic shows the factory bait and the lip angle. The next pic shows the sharpie line I drew on the bait to make sure the lip angle and placement was as close to stock as possible. After I was happy with the line, I used masking tape and taped the whole area and traced the line thru the tape with a sharpie. Now that I've done a few of these and learned a lot along the way. One a table saw will tear the bait up and tends to rip the paint off too, learned that on my first one band saw blade is too thin, and the cut tends to not be super straight. so I use a dremel with a cutting wheel and de burring tool now. I make the first cut with the wheel in the center of the tape and slowly work the area open allowing a for little room for the epoxy to adhere. Once I'm happy with the depth I use the deburring tool and clean up the cut and area around the slot. All my pics looked awful, but you can get the visual idea. after the cut is made and I'm happy with edges, I use some thinned etex epoxy to reseal the exposed wood. then once that cures, I use a two part water proof epoxy from home depot, I've tried a few different ones and this one seems to be the strongest. I tape the lip and surrounding area of the bait to allow the excess epoxy to be easily removed. In the pic you can see the clear coat peeling up from the cut, these baits are notorious for peeling and paint adhering problems. In the next pic you can see the angle and epoxy, its gray in color, which gets covered later on. Then after 24-48 hours I remove all the tape and clean up any excess epoxy with a new razor blade, then a serious of clear nail polish coats, about 5 coats total, on the epoxy, edge of the lip and anywhere the paint may have an issue, I also put some coats on any of the hook rash or open areas, just to help it down the road. Then I re-tape the lip and area and covered the gray epoxy with black nail polish, 2 coats, followed by 3 coats of clear. So now the lip is sealed, epoxied and blended in and strong in the bait After a couple days, I put the hardware back on and test swam it, wakes awesome. Its not a difficult mod to do, just slow and time consuming and I like my mods to be as clean as possible. Hope that helps someone who wants a billed shellcracker. Hope you stick a pig on it Nate!!! got out on Monday April 6th, from 1230-630. mostly went out to test the new tracker, (new to us, 2006) and test swim some baits and new set ups after the painfully long cold miserable winter here in Rhode Island. Decided to throw the g2 shellcracker and work it like a jerkbait, couple cranks, pause, crank, twitch, pause and so on. this was the best one of the day, 4lbs 3oz, had two other dinks, my buddy caught the skunk but was great to be out again, boat ran great and is a huge upgrade over our crawdad and john boats. This pond was frozen solid March 30th and 100% fishable by Saturday April 4th, water was 46.4 wgen we launched and 48.8 when we left.
